Will couldn't believe his good luck. When he first saw Emma in the cave, he told her his family, all but his sister, were gone for the day, and asked if she would come back with him just to see what Chadwick Farm was like. He promised her that they'd stay off the lane and make their way through the thickest cover of trees and brush. No one would see her, and she could get a look at where he lived. Then as soon as she wanted, he'd take her back to the cave.
"It's a good place, Emma," he told her. "The people there are real nice, and someday maybe you'll decide you want to live there. Say you'll come with me."
He didn't think she would, but Emma surprised him by saying yes. When they came into the farm yard, Will realized that he'd only been gone a little over an hour. Abby wouldn't be back for a long time, and Emma could stay at least through dinner.
As they approached the house, Emma said, "Won't your sister tell Miz Kelly that I came here today?"
"Don't worry about Angel," he assured her. "I'll make her swear not to tell, and when Angel swears, that's it. She may act a little touched at times, but when she gives her word, you could pluck a silver dollar down that she won't break it."
They reached the porch steps, and Will went up to the front door leaving Emma in the yard. "You stay here till I tell Angel I'm back. If you want, go ahead and have a look around, and I'll come get you in a minute."
Before he went inside, he tried to bolster Emma's confidence with a wide grin. It was so good to have her at his home and to know she trusted him enough to come. He wanted her to feel like she belonged. She gave him a little nod and a wave, and he went inside to find Angel.
She wasn't in the parlor where he'd left her, and she wasn't in the kitchen. He looked in Abby's bedroom and, not finding her there, called up the ladder to the loft. He was just about to go out back and see if she was in the vegetable garden or the apple orchard when he heard a howl that froze him where he stood. He couldn't tell if it was a shriek of pain or anger, but it was uttered in fierce desperation, and it came from the direction of the big willow tree.
Will ran through the house, bounded down the front steps, and tore across the yard toward the lean-to. He tried to scream for Emma and Angel, but his breath burned in his lungs. No sound came from his constricted vocal cords, but fear raged in his veins and pounded in his ears.
He hit the entrance to the shed with the force of a locomotive, and only by grasping the tree and the side of the lean-to was he able to stop his forward motion.
